Reuben Paterson sees the glitter-paintings in Black Matters as the first exponents of a new and ongoing body of work which takes the brief beauty of fireworks as its subject matter. He considers the paradox of capturing a fleeting moment in time and space, and how his glitter medium allows them to retain a sense of dynamism and radiance. From the joyful - and suggestive - names of the paintings to the sparkling complexity of the glitter patterns, the artist is looking at how and what we celebrate. With an exhibition title that deliberately references the “Black Lives Matter” protest movement, Paterson reminds us to rejoice in the vitality of human existence in all its hues.
