I have a pond (about 150' x 200') behind my new home and to my great surprise and delight, a number of species of ducks settled onto the pond. Over a period of just over two months (end of March to mid-April) last year, the wood ducks gathered in numbers up to 14 at one time.
They are very sensitive to even the slightest sound or movement, so I set up a blind to photograph them, but even so had to be very careful not to make any non-natural sound.
The story in the film is essentially correct and for the most part it is told in the order in which it occurred. I have interpreted what I saw in a gently anthropormorphic way, but I have not changed the actions to fit a preconceived storyline.
The camera is a Canon XLH1s fitted with stock lens and a tele zoom (80-400mm) Nikon lens. I found it was important to use ND filters to keep the f number on the Nikon lens at f6.3 or below. The images and sounds were recorded using a Nanoflash at 100mbps rather than the tape system of the camera itself. Postproduction was using Premiere Pro CS4 then CS5.
