High fashion meets high tech at Material Worlds, a one-night-only event presented by Carnegie Museum of Art at Pittsburgh’s Ace Hotel.
Inspired by the CMOA exhibition Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion (February 4–May 1, 2017), local artists will showcase wearable works of art featuring innovative technology, unique processes, and unconventional materials. Mingle with other Pittsburgh professionals and creatives during a thrilling runway show.
Artists and designers were selected by a CMOA committee from an open call based on their abilities to visualize the ideals and aesthetics of design inspired by Iris van Herpen. Each designer or team will produce two looks for the runway. Participating artists include:
Team: Richard Chou + Chengcheng Zhao
Team: Zain Islam-Hashmi + Brandon Dareff
Sarah Jane Sindler
Inspired by Iris
Fashion designer Iris van Herpen marries precision and meticulous handcraft, inventive technological solutions, and a striking, futuristic aesthetic. Organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and Groninger Museum, The Netherlands, Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion gathers seven years of van Herpen’s original haute couture for this exhibition: her first North American tour. On view through May 1 at Carnegie Museum of Art, it presents 15 of her collections across a bewildering range of materials and techniques.
Celebrities like Beyonce, Bjork, Lady Gaga, and Scarlett Johansson have sought her luxe, otherworldly dresses. Transforming Fashion at CMOA is a rare chance to experience the broad sweep of her extraordinary designs together in one place.
