Ibrahim Kargbo, a 28-year-old powerlifter who contracts full-time as a driver for an NGO in Sierra Leone, is training for his country's "Salone Strongest Man" competition that takes place on April 29, 2017. Also known as "Big 50" (as in 50 Cent), Ibrahim was diagnosed with malaria two weeks ago and it put a bump in his routine, but it hasn't stopped his resolve to win the 100 million Leone first prize (about $13,300).
The gym you see in this video was built entirely by Ibrahim himself near his home in the Malama, Lumley community in Freetown. The weights and equipment are made from scaffolding bars, water pipe, truck parts, concrete and various other objects. He has no idea how much he's lifting, but it's all relative. When you're recovering from malaria, you know you're down. You can't flip those 550-pound caterpillar tires like you used to.
