An idea to make your own bicycle with commonly available parts and materials.
The Ironwood bicycle has a laminated wooden frame and forks to which standard bicycle components are directly bolted. It can be made with basic carpentry and metalwork skills, without the need for welding.
The frames are capable of being fitted with any components, and made to any geometry, in the spirit of universal bicycle technology.
It is intended to develop a family of related wooden accessories such as trailers and carriers.

Research is ongoing at the University of Strathclyde into the structural integrity of the bike frame. Various structural loading cases are being investigated using computer modelling and practical testing.
