The Institute of Oral History presents the first video from our on-going project, "Voices from the Border." This oral history project documents the lives, the experiences, and the dreams of fronterizos, border people. In July 2016, we conducted oral histories with a number of people who had attended segregated "Mexican schools" in El Paso as well as integrated public schools in the 1970s and before. Their ages ranged from their 50s to their 80s. In this video, several El Pasoans talk about what it was like to attend school at a time when there was widespread discrimination against Mexican American students. State Senator Jose Rodriguez as well as Dr. Yolanda Chávez Leyva, Director of the Institute of Oral History, also appear in the video.
