HALMONI (Short Documentary)

Ju Hong once held a secret that is now an integral part of his identity: he is an undocumented immigrant. Ju is limited in his rights and privileges as compared to those of a U.S. citizen, one being that he is unable to travel freely outside of the country due to the risk of deportation. After 13 years of separation, Ju receives special permission from the U.S. government to travel for an allotted 20 days and reunite with his grandmother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

HALMONI (“Grandmother”) follows the 24-year-old immigrant activist as he struggles to understand his own identity and the deep sense of responsibility he feels toward his family. Intimate moments shared with his family members in South Korea reveal that being undocumented may not be just a label to define one's immigration status. His story represents just one of the millions of undocumented immigrants living in America today.
