What resources, supports, and systems could help elementary-school students begin to learn foundational energy ideas addressed in the new science standards? The Focus on Energy project is developing professional learning and classroom activities that provide a framework, language, and representations for young students to reason about energy. The video shows students using multiple practices of science and a sophisticated understanding of the nature and flow of energy. They develop and refine models to explain everyday phenomena in terms of energy. Classroom observations and project assessments are showing that, with well-prepared teachers and carefully designed curriculum, young students are capable of engaging in model-based reasoning and can begin to learn abstract energy ideas in elementary school.
