Sadly, I’ve heard many “Christians” over the years say things like: “I can follow Jesus without the church.” “I don’t need the church! It’s me and Jesus!” “What can the church provide me that I can’t find in the Bible?” I worship God alone.” I honestly believe that these responses are sinful and need to be corrected by the word of God (see Heb. 10:24-25). My goal for today is for God’s people at MCC to be reminded of the absolute necessity of following Jesus in community with other believers. The reasons for God’s set-apart community, the church, are vast, but I wish to simply focus on one this morning. In order to prevent followers of Jesus from falling back into a life of selfishness and disobedience to God, the writer of Hebrews charges the church with the task of encouraging other believers to stick with Christ! We need the church, because we need other followers of Jesus to come alongside us, hold us accountable and exhort us with the word of God to continue pursuing the way of Jesus and His mission! I want to challenge all of us today to think afresh how we might do a better job of encouraging other believers to stick with Christ! By the way, the writer of Hebrews says that we are to do this every day! Are you currently in a life group? Are you in a one-on-one bible study? Let’s all get to work encouraging other Christians in our church to stick with Christ!
