The idea of the European Capital of Culture is really a big fake. It is the European Community’s idea how to create a common space of values and a common space of identity. It is a project that won’t succeed because there is too much bureaucratic thinking in it. But I think the European Capital of Culture project in our case in Maribor is just great. It shows the negative sides of the city authorities and public institutions, it shows how they deal with the independent sector and nongovernmental organisations. In this project we can clearly see how things are dealt with “behind the curtain” or “under the table,” we can see how easy it is to get public money to implement private ideas, etc. For us it is great because it gave us the opportunity to open this rotten book and show to the wider public how money is being spent, how decisions are made and how transparency works here. We just love this project.
