I felt a kinship right away with Mike Vial when he came to record for The River Street Anthology in my Ypsi basement, though he probably didn't know it. I don't know if it was a kinship I guess. It might have been envy. I dunno- maybe I'm just more comfortable with musicians when I'm jealous of them. It is always so special to see/hear a songwriter who so carefully crafts songs with not a thing out of place. No unnecessary frills- its like the song as a whole IS all of the bells and whistles that you could ask for. After almost 300 recordings by the RSA team, I can't emphasize enough how important and relieving it is to work with someone who knows exactly how to work with a microphone. It sounds easy, just like playing a tambourine sounds easy. It isn't. In a project which utilizes just a single condenser mic, knowing how to play that microphone is just as important as knowing how to play your guitar. Mike was pretty amazing at both. His song, A World That's Bigger, was as gorgeous as Mike was deft at surviving the full RSA media circus, ie Charles Steen filming the session, two members of the Mlive team photographing, filming, and interviewing in that damp, cramped basement. Thanks so much for coming, Mike- you were as refreshing as your music is wonderful, and as radly patient and cool as I was jealous.
