Geij was created by photographing an evolving collage on the studio wall. Each second of animation consists of seven or eight original photographs of light and shadow cast by cut paper silhouettes and colored transparencies on an overhead projector aimed at a wall-mounted drawing.
The concept for Geij evolved from the experience of listening to Tescon Pol’s music, from which visions grew of a fictional, though plausible world, where a poisoned atmosphere is restored by plants and insects.
Geij is also the name of the featured song by Tescon Pol. GEIJ stands for Ganymede, Europa, Io, and Jupiter. Three of the planet’s moons orbit Jupiter in a 1:2:4 resonance. This means that Ganymede completes 1 orbit in the time it takes Europa to complete two, and Io, four. Tescon Pol’s chords for Geij were arranged as such.
