This morning we will be looking at the Transfiguration of Jesus in Mark 9:1-13, a passage that has eluded and confounded many followers of Jesus. One reads this story with a sense of wonder and amazement, and yet often walks away with little understanding of what was intended by this glorious scene. It’s my goal today to help us see the Kingdom implications of this incredible passage. In a very real sense, the curtain is drawn back on the Mount of Transfiguration and the royal identity and mission of Jesus brought to light! In order to fully comprehend this text, we must carefully journey back to the Old Testament, specifically the story of the Exodus. The Exodus-rich language and allusions are clear and thus alert the reader to the time of New Exodus, of divine visitation and rescue present in Jesus! Knowing this, how must one respond? In vs. 7 the Father says, “Listen to him.” Are you listening to Jesus today? Recall Peter’s words to Jesus in John 6:68: “You have the words of eternal life.” May we commit today to listening to the King, the King who indeed has the words of eternal life!
