A little distraction from the real world to help put things in their proper perspective.

I created this work for the sheer fun of it, using the unique and wonderful Russell Oberlin as narrator; my recording of Schubert’s DIE FORELLE with vocalists Shirley Perkins, soprano, Nicole Hyde, alto, Alex Guerrero, tenor, and Peter Ludwig, bass, and Richard Duncan conducting and accompanying; plus odds and ends of rough videos and stills left over from BLACK ON BLACK /13.

Russell Oberlin, whose career as the world’s leading counter-tenor is legendary, went on to glory as principal in FACADE and then in the part of the Narrator in the Lark Ascending production of THE GREAT DEBATE IN HELL (Books I and II of PARADISE LOST) and as the reader in the Lark Ascending production of WHEN LILACS LAST IN THE DOORYARD BLOOM’D.

The recording of Schubert’s DIE FORELLE grew out of SCHUBERT MAL VIER, yet another Lark Ascending production. It was my idea to score Schubert’s lieder for vocal quartet, taking my cue from Schubert himself, who re-arranged DIE FORELLE (“The Trout”) for piano quintet and another lied, DER TOD UND DAS MÄDCHEN (“Death and the Maiden”), for string quartet. It needed only the multi-talented Richard Duncan to do the arranging.

SCHUBERT MAL VIER was presented at the Austrian Cultural Forum and the German Consulate in the spring of 2006 to overflowing houses.
