Mediacoop was founded by Colin Norris and Stu Teehan in 2009 with the intention of changing the face of media production in Dublin and Ireland, and so far so good.
Their no frills business model has seen them grow exponentially, and now almost two years after inception they have a client list which includes Volkswagen, Guinness, Ulster Bank, Paddy Power, Bacardi, Amnesty International, Gillette, Fleishman Hillard PR, Owens DDB, Ogilvy, Britvic, Cemex and many, many more.
Colin and Stu both come from a traditional television background. From having started at the bottom, they have worked their way up to running their own company. They have some really good points for people who work as freelancers.
“The phone will ring if you get out and meet people, muck in and be willing to start at the bottom. No matter how good your technical skills are, if you are not able to easily communicate, and get on well with people you work with, it will be difficult to find jobs.”
Ireland is still a good place to be in for media. Budgets are tighter but there is still money to be made. Also the media is a difficult industry everywhere in the world, and a least in Ireland you are in the loop and will find someone to help you out.
Some points Colin and Stu had on video production for the web were as follows:
T.V. is now a dinosaur (they come from T.V. production originally)
For advertisers the web is the best place as you can directly target your audience. T.V. is expensive for advertisers. Keep you video for web content short, attention spans for online videos is short (for their third Paddy Power viral video Colin and Stu had a joke within 5 seconds).
