Five cartels, five countries, five stories. One deal.
The System is a mini-series portraying the inner workings of the world's most powerful cartels and the alliances that bind them together.
The stories are based around a transaction that took place in 2009: a Colombian cartel orders a consignment of kerosene from a Pakistani Taliban leader for use in their cocaine manufacturing operations. In exchange, and with the help of 9 other global crime syndicates, they will provide the Taliban group with arms and ammunition. The series follows the journey of the shipment, observing the various kinds of criminal activities that accompany its passage from supplier to buyer and back again.
Each episode is set in the territory of a particular “syndicate” (cartel, mafia, clandestine group, etc.), exploring their unique microcosm through key characters and their collateral victims.
Each episode can be followed and enjoyed on its own, but the overarching intrigue surrounding the international transaction is what unites the series and rewards faithful viewers.
Some of these characters will reappear in subsequent episodes; setting them off on various trajectories depending on the alliances they have entered into. The characters and storylines involved are all based on real people and events.
