A little girl discovers a magic telescope that reveals the past... and the future.
This is a film I wrote and directed. It's about a girl who finds a magic telescope. When she looks through it the right way she sees into the future, when she turns it backwards she can see into the past. I shot on super 8mm for the "past", 35mm for the "future" and 16mm for the "present" - then transferred it all onto 35mm using an optical printer. The present, where most of the film takes place is purposely dowdy looking because Naomi is fed up with everything - this blah look is something I regret now as it makes a whole bunch of the film a bit ugly looking! But the super 8mm and 35mm footage turned out beautifully. The camera operator and I took a super 8 camera each and filmed at the same time to capture the 1950's footage. I ended up transferring it the old-fashioned way - projected it onto a wall and filmed it with an ancient Russian-made 35mm camera. The result was an evocative slow flicker that really added to the texture.
