These are shadows of the past, their past and ours. They project on both the Mansion and the Quarters of the Slaves and on all of us. Our actions matter to others now and cast light or darkness on those to come.
About the Piece: Janette K Hopper conceived this performance art piece for the SARUS Festival in Wilmington NC. It is an installation (called “Burnt”) at the Bellamy Mansion situated between the Slave Quarters and the Mansion. The installation is a stark line of bare trees lighted from both sides, throwing shadows on the Slave Quarters and the Mansion. The performance (called “Shadows of the Past”) is visual conversation, snippets discussing barriers between us all.
