I wrote about Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth back in the CBGBs days, when we were all starting out. Because their relationship was NEVER public, I didn’t even clue in that they were together and in love; I just thought they were friends who got along very well. How did they manage keeping private life so private when living a very public life?? This question and more was asked on February 9, 2011, when a double dose or a one-two punch of R&R history was served on FINDING BLISS with Lauren Agnelli.
Ah, Chris and Tina: I knew them when they lived in a loft on Christie Street in downtown New York in the mid Seventies (I even slept over once). With their friend David Byrne, they founded one of the most influential pop rock bands of the 20th century. Called “New Wave Rock,” “Art Rock,” whatever, the TALKING HEADS did fantastically well.
THEN, after Talking Heads, to top themselves, Chris and Tina started a more rhythmic, world beat kind of band with female vocals thrown in, TOM TOM CLUB.
They’ve always been classy, kind, inclusive, interesting, smart, well mannered, and charming as well as talented and, well, LUCKY, perhaps. But then, what is luck except 98% preparation and 2% openness to the workings of the universe? Once you do that, you’re really truly FINDING BLISS!
