Future of Leadership Interview: Calvyn Gilfellan (CEO Castle of Good Hope)
Calvyn Gilfellan is currently the Chief Executive Officer at Castle Control Board, looking after South Africa's oldest heritage building (dating back 350 years), and the former CEO of Routes Unlimited where he was responsible for marketing and promotion of Cape Town, the world's premier tourism destination (according to the New York Times, 2015) and the Western Cape.
Calvyn has been instrumental in transforming the Castle into a living heritage and position it as a place of education, healing, reconciliation and understanding - SA's next UNESCO World Heritage site.
Amongst many other initiatives, the Castle of Good Hope's recent additions of a Khoisan Kraal and two sprightly goats received positive reactions from their visitors, and Gilfellan says the idea was to patch some loopholes in history, and also educate the younger generations about Khoisan people who were there long before the castle was ever built.
Calvyn's career started as a lecturer at the University of the Western Cape and he was personally involved in South Africa's liberation struggle from Apartheid where he learnt many important leadership lessons, both in politics and society at large.
He has been mentoring aspiring leaders for most of his career and shares his experiences of what makes a mentoring relationship succeed and how to find your mentor in this interview, along with many pearls of experience from his wide and varied career.
