A sandstone distance stone of the Second Legion, found on the north bank of Duntocher Burn between 1826-1844. It is 50cm high by 19cm deep and records the completion of 4140 feet of the Antonine Wall.
Carved on the stone are the symbols of the legion, a Capricorn (half-goat, half-fish) and Pegasus (flying horse). The inscription reads LEG II AVG F P IIII CXL which translates as: "The Second Augustan Legion built 4140 feet [of the wall]".
This distance stone is one of 19 that have been discovered along the Antonine Wall. Together, they provide a unique record of the construction of the wall and form the most important collection of Roman sculpture on any Roman frontier.
The stone is on display in The Hunterian Museum. Glasgow [object number GLAHM F.10].
