In January 2010 World Vision and the villagers of Guayajayuco finished installing a new irrigation system! The agriculture reform and water program will increase farming production and improve the environment. A total of 125 families will directly benefit. Landowners who gave a portion of their land to families without property will gain access to the new water system. And households that once had no land will have their own fields to farm.
The community of Guayajayuco is located near the Haitian border in the basin of the Artibonito River. It is an environmentally fragile, highland area. Lack of irrigation is a significant problem for Guayajayuco’s farmers, whose planting areas lie in little valleys among the mountains. Because rain is lacking for most of the year, and when rain comes it is intense and erosive, the agricultural potential is limited. Many families - even those with land - find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty, unable to meet their household food needs or generate sufficient produce for sale.
