Battery technology improvement is critical for improving EV range, performance and cost. New materials are already coming - compared to the NiMH battery used in the Prius, the Volt and Leaf are using Li-Ion batteries to reach higher energy density. Improvements on the table include solid polymer electrolyte, advanced metal cathode, oxygen cathode and many others. System- level design is also key to achieving the needed performance and safety.
