Untitled (Visuals) 1999
Produced in my last term at college in 1999 before going onto Art School, this was the first film I made.
Overlapping themes are cut in a montage designed to give the viewer an overall sense of rhythm, journey and vision. Some of these scenes seem continuous and repetitive like fractal patterns continually growing, whilst others are more progressive and develop like a story.
Clips were sampled from documentaries and films then combined with effects that I'd produced and shot myself. I created loops for all of these clips, processed them and compiled them in sections on around 15 VHS tapes. I then mixed the tapes in a live performance in the edit suite to a music track called Pretty Poison by Tim Schuldt using 3 VHS decks and a Vision Mixer. In doing this, every clip went down several generations in quality. The resulting film has degraded images and additional nuances which give the film even more of a hand crafted look.
