Shown at L'Ecart Lieu D'Art Actuel in Rouyn-Noranda, QC in May 2017
As part of Les fleurs animales curated by Cynthia Girard-Renard
Flower Study depicts Amelia Garretson-Persans attempting to capture a perfect cinematic moment in her studio while she was pregnant with her first child. Flower Study was inspired by the beautiful and surreal scenes of dancing flowers and fairies in Disney’s Fantasia. These images were designed by the first female artists to work at Disney, who used to sketch the blossoms they found outside the Disney studios.
Flower Study shows the process of experimenting and observing, rather than the perfect cinematic moment itself. By presenting this uncertainty as the finished work, Garretson-Persans seeks to elevate feminine creative processes and honor these unsung artists.
