The top of the world is carved in rock and stone; the people who call the high places home, too, are etched into the bedrock and rubble. Nepal scratches along the atmosphere and glaciers seep onto to the land below. The nation is diverse, yes – in its people, its culture and wildlife – but there is a singular rugged essence that persists in the jagged edges and dry plains, a sense that time hasn’t touched here because it fears to tread the high cliffs and dry ravines. In the soulful, painted faces of the people of Nepal there is severity and mischief; life this high can be hard, but it’s also joyous, ancient, and unspoiled.
