2017 Future of StoryTelling Summit Speaker: D. Fox Harrell, Professor of Digital Media in Comparative Media Studies and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
D. Fox Harrell, Professor of Digital Media in both the Comparative Media Studies Program and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT, has discovered that the human biases that shape our society are replicated--and sometimes intensified--in the virtual world. To understand and combat this phenomenon, Harrell founded and directs the MIT Imagination, Computation, and Expression Laboratory (ICE Lab), which seeks to develop new forms of computational narratives, video games, social media, and other types of digital media that empower users and address biases. Harrell's work investigates how the lines between the digital and physical have become blurred, and how the lack of nuance in digital media can lead to damaging behaviors and stereotypes.
