The Mississippi River town of Helena-West Helena becomes an energized community of blues musicians and fans, gathered to celebrate the King Biscuit Blues Festival the first weekend in October. The festival took its name from the famous King Biscuit Time radio program. It is now a four-day event that showcases products like crafts, homemade cakes, biscuits, treats and fresh produce, spit roast, wraps, sandwiches, pies, gifts, etc. The festival also hosts a barbecue competition. It began in 1986 as a one-day event with 500 attendees. It grew into a multi-day, multi-stage event with more than 100,000 fans. It draws blues enthusiasts from around America and the world. Helena-West Helena's population is declining, but hotels and motels there have limited vacancies on the festival weekend. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as well as numerous famous blues musicians have performed at the Festival.
