The veil, or Hijab, with which some Muslim women cover themselves, has been a matter of controversy in the West. Two sisters in Orange County, California are trying to change that. They see it as a fashion accessory. Marwa Atik and Tasneem Sabri are the heads of this small, but growing company Vela Scarves.
For Marwa and Tasneem, being Muslim and dressing modestly does not mean dressing terribly. The lack of a market in the U.S. allows specialized stores like Vela Scarves to exist. They sell to customers here in the U.S. as well as countries like the U.K., Canada, Australia and Indonesia. They see a huge demand for their products that major brands are not meeting.
