February 26, 2009: Khovsgol, Mongolia
On the Mongolian Lunar New Year, worshippers greet the rising sun from a mountaintop overlooking the capital of Khovsgol. The cairn around which they circle and tie azure blue cloths is called an ovoo. In shamanistic tradition, people visit these shrines and make offerings to the sky and mountains.
This is one in a series of short documentaries exploring Mongolian culture and religion, sponsored by a Fulbright grant.
