A major theme in Mark’s gospel is the authority of Jesus. Up to this point in our story, Jesus has demonstrated His authority by casting out demons, forgiving sin, calming the storm and clearing the temple. The authority of King Jesus is intended to move us to awe and allegiance. In our passage, Jesus’ detractors—the religious and political leaders—question His authority. In fact, they miss His identity and inherent authority because of their misplaced awe. Their counter-Kingdom agendas and fear of man had caused them to miss the Messiah! Today, I would challenge you to think hard about who or what has your awe. Is it King Jesus or someone or something else? Examine the life of Jesus today and see the God of the Universe at work bringing His saving plan to fruition. Jesus is the God-King! Let’s be in awe of Him and give Him our allegiance!
