God’s plan has always been to create a fruitful people, set apart for Him and His glory, and committed to His mission! Christ would fulfill all of this, and create around Himself the True People of God—the church. As we learn in our passage today, God’s plan for a fruitful vineyard—a people committed to the King and His mission—would not be thwarted. Vs. 9 tells us that the owner of the vineyard would destroy the former tenants (unfruitful Israel) and give the vineyard to others. These others are simply those who connect to Christ—the true vine! How is one brought into this people, and furthermore, how does one become fruitful? The answer to both questions is simply to connect with Jesus by faith. We are reconciled to God by faith in Jesus, and it is by faith that we receive the Holy Spirit (who works in us to bear fruit). In John 15:5 Jesus states, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit…” Jesus fulfills Israel’s vocation as the fruitful vine (Isaiah 5:1-7), and we who connect to that vine (by faith) are transformed to be God’s fruitful people! May God’s church at MCC bear fruit for the glory of God! As God’s vine-people, we are called to grow God’s Kingdom through the preaching of the gospel, so that others can connect to Christ by faith and be brought into God’s family.
