This year we celebrated the Earth Day in a very special
way. The main theme was a problem of using too much
Our teacher explained how plastic is harmful for the
environment. Plastic waste is very difficult to recycle
and it takes hundreds of years to decompose. We buy so
many plastic products every day and after use we just
throw it away.
One of our projects for this year's Earth Day event was
related to twistable crayons which many children use at
school and at home.
Twistable crayons have wax lead and a plastic barrel.
After the lead is used up we have to throw away the
plastic part. That's a waste of plastic! This barrel is
very often still good. If we had another extra lead, we
could just replace the used one with a new one and keep
the barrel as long as it is not broken.
Unfortunately, producers of twistable crayons don't sell
extra leads in their crayon's packages and we have no
choice but to trash the plastic part and pollute the
There is a similar problem with white board erasers that
teachers use at school. The eraser has hard plastic case
and soft, spongy pad covered with felt. When the felt
part gets very dirty it can't be used because it leaves
smudges on the white board. Teachers usually throw the
eraser away, even though the sturdy plastic casing is still
That is very sad. We want to do something about it. We
want the manufacturers to change the way they package
their products to give us more choice if we want to buy
crayons or erasers with replaceable parts.
