Meet Steve Backus, lumberjack turned artist for whom the trees are a canvas and the chainsaw is his tool. Backus lives on a four-acre compound on Whidbey island, once the site of the very same sawmill where Backus worked asa teen. Now it's a his own motley gallery of wood carved figures. A second-generation wood carver, Backus has been in the business for 40 years, following in the footsteps of his mother.
