Our friend Reed Fromer led us into song at “Sing for a Better World”, an inspiring community sing-along at The Redwoods in Mill Valley. Over a hundred people gathered to learn and share songs for justice, that promote positive visions of a better world.
Music has always been a vital component of social change. This free event aimed to expand the circle of people who can lead singing at rallies, marches, and other events in support of peace, environmental preservation, immigrant rights, and social justice.
Reed is a longtime singer, songwriter, teacher and activist, and a great music director. Throughout his life, he has provided support to movements for peace and human rights. His family also has a long track record of social activism, and a couple of the songs were written by his uncle Jon Fromer.
Here are the tunes we sang together:
• Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around
• We Shall Not Be Moved
• Soon And Very Soon
• For What It's Worth
• Want My Freedom Now
• Come Go With Me To That Land
• Can't Keep Me Quiet
• Looking For Freedom
My favorite was “Soon and Very Soon”, when the audience asked that we add new verses like “Let’s get rid of Trump … And Pence and Ryan too …. We are going to change this world!”
This free community gathering took place at the Redwoods Retirement Community in Mill Valley on on July 26, 2017, from 7 - 9 pm. It was uplifting to hear so many seniors participate and join their voices with ours.
Organizations co-sponsoring the event include: 350Marin.org, Elders Climate Action - Northern California Chapter, OFA Marin, Marin Peace & Justice Coalition, Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), Resilient Neighborhoods, Sierra Club Marin Group, Social Justice Center of Marin, Sustainable Marin, Sustainable Novato, Sustainable San Rafael, and United Marin Rising. Special thanks to Marilyn Price and Jacki Fromer for hosting us!
Singing together is good for the soul and it brings people together. Try it out in your community!
