Environmental concerns were the inspiration for this project. I wanted to make a video that addressed our responsibility regarding the current state of the environment. I believe our children will hold us accountable if we fail to act. What will we do – ask them to close their eyes?
I asked my daughter to collaborate on this project. She enthusiastically agreed and I explained what I hoped to get on tape. As we began to film, however, it became clear that the content of the project changed in a way I had not anticipated.
Transformed from environmental commentary to a poignant depiction of the complex relationship between a young child and her parent, the project displays notions of control and obedience, manipulation and negotiation, authority and acquiescence.
The project’s title, "Nearly Five," refers both to her age and our achievement of nearly five minutes of video on our thirteenth and final take.
