Mark 12:28-34 is one of the most beloved passages in the gospels! In it, Jesus lays out the two great commandments of Scripture—love for God and love for neighbor. As you’ll see today, it is imperative that we view these two commandments, not as entrance points into the Kingdom of God, but as a way of life intended to characterize God’s new creation community—the local church. We enter into the Kingdom through the Gospel, namely our appropriate response to the gospel (repentance and faith), and are then empowered by the Spirit to live lives of vertical and horizontal love. Again, such love is meant to declare to the watching world: “This is what it looks like to live life with Jesus as King!” May our love for God and His image-bearers point the world to the world to come, and may it serve as an invitation for the lost to come and join us by trusting in Jesus!
