From the beginning stages of the project I had planned to animate a substantial part of the film using the Valve SDK. At the time I had absolutely no idea how to use any of those tools, nor did I have a lick of understanding of CGI pipelines. I felt it just wouldn't work to use any other medium, so I dove in and figured it out.
I wanted to juxtapose analog and digital media in such a way as to question our traditional and cultural notions of truth and reality. Jean Rousch, for example, argued passionately that one could never use video to find truth in documentary cinema. The world we see emerging around us today stands in defiance of this school of technological determinism. There is bountiful evidence suggesting that not only is truth independent of the observer, but that every advance in technology allows us one step closer to the synchronization of observation and phenomenon.
So in search of truthiness I came to the Source Engine and Garry's Mod. I built my own environment in Hammer, modified the face of Wallace Breen to resemble my dad (who plays the main character of the film), and shot all the animated sequences within Garry's Mod. At turns I was elated and infuriated by the possibilities and technicalities of this toolset. I'm very excited to see how machinima interacts with more widespread media in the future.
I hope you enjoy the film! If you have any questions feel free to ask.
