The Swallow and the Squeeze is an experimental science film that illustrates the connection between mind and gut by following the process of eating. From the rumblings of hunger to eventual excretion, we find digestion entangled with emotion at every stage. The film combines contemporary scientific understanding with philosophical musings about where we begin and end, and builds on historical representations of the human body both in science and performance. Monochrome costumed figures evoke organs, systems, and microbes; their movements evoke passages, boundaries, obstructions and flows.
The Swallow and The Squeeze was created through a collaboration between scientists, researchers, dancers and visual artists commissioned by Medical Museion at the Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and further funded by the Bikuben Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.
