bant has been designed to help adolescents improve diabetes self-management. bant features wireless, automated transfer of readings directly from a blood glucose meter to an iPhone or iPod Touch device. bant is different from current web-based and mobile “electronic logbook” systems because it uses prompts to guide the adolescent and family through the analysis of blood glucose data and the changes in treatment that are needed. When blood glucose levels are out of range for 3 days in a row, bant detects this trend and prompts user decision-making about the cause of the trend and how to manage it. bant is also different because it is designed to utilize social networking and rewards to encourage and reinforce self-management behaviors. For example, once a blood glucose test is completed the user receives xp (experience points) which are collected and converted to iTunes gifts at predefined intervals. Finally, bant is integrated with a secure online personal health record (PHR) called Telus Health Space (based on Microsoft HealthVault) where user data is stored securely and may be shared with parents and providers. This PHR is the only certified consumer platform approved by the Federal agency Canada Health Infoway.
