A Porsche had never finished the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally — until 2017. That's when a team out of Oregon fielded two 911s to conquer the inhospitable terrain over five days of off-road racing down the entire length of the Baja Peninsula.
Rothsport Racing prepared the two Porsche 964s and brought along some serious driving talent to ensure the team finished the race. Shop owner Jeff Gamroth and colleague Carl Van Austen drove one, the red car nicknamed “Red Sled,” while Jeff Zwart and Cameron Healey drove the other, “Desert Flyer.” It would be tough for the height-challenged sports cars to navigate the rough terrain for over 1,000 miles, but fortunately Gamroth’s crew came prepared — even bringing a spare engine in case of a worst-case scenario.
