DIRECTOR YONY LEYSER IN ATTENDANCE
What do you do when you, as a queer person, don’t feel like you fit in to the queer communities that already exist? You start a counter-movement.
In Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution the concept “queercore” is explored, a cultural and social movement that came out of the punk movement of the 80s and 90s. Through subversive films, music and fanzines queercore developed in opposition to the already established queer communities.
The movement is best described as a radical, anti-capitalist, DIY approach which is explained through interviews with several famous icons from the movement. Among others, we meet Bruce LaBruce, John Waters, Justin Vivian Bond, Pansy Division, Penny Arcade and Kim Gordon, who discusses homophobia, gender, feminism, assimilation, sex and art. The interviews are accompanied by footage from films, concerts and important events from the period, and makes for a colorful history lesson!
