A Photo Story by Danny McKenzie
“'Visionary' is a term that is thrown around all too loosely, but George McLean, late owner and publisher of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, was a true visionary.
His legacy of growing 'the poorest region in the poorest state in America' into Mississippi’s most progressive region, and his investments in Tupelo and Northeast Mississippi are still paying off today – 34 years after his death. We can carry forward his example by keeping alive regional cooperation, and his mantra that, 'Community development precedes economic development.’
The Tupelo Spirit is alive and doing well. And George McLean reminds us to believe in our city and region."

Tupelo is one of ten cities elected to participate in “Celebrating Storytelling”, a Mississippi Bicentennial project that will culminate with 100 community voices.
In August 2017, community leaders produced a series of eight photo documentaries, highlighting people and initiatives that have built Tupelo from its beginnings. The event was a unique occasion to celebrate aspects of “Tupelo spirit” that have carried the community from generation to generation, and to define new pathways forward.
