A Photo Story by Gerald Wages
"I chose to tell the story of how the citizens of Tupelo stepped up to raise the money needed for the construction of a hospital in 1936, despite the Great Depression and a devastating tornado. They could have easily given up, but they didn't.
NMMC has grown to a regional medical center that serves 24 counties and received numerous national awards and recognition.
The important question now is, how will we continue the 'Tupelo Spirit' in the future, and how can that Spirit help our community to accomplish so much more?"
- Gerald Wages, Retired North Mississippi Health Services Executive

Tupelo is one of ten cities elected to participate in “Celebrating Storytelling”, a Mississippi Bicentennial project that will culminate with 100 community voices.
In August 2017, community leaders produced a series of eight photo documentaries, highlighting people and initiatives that have built Tupelo from its beginnings. The event was a unique occasion to celebrate aspects of “Tupelo spirit” that have carried the community from generation to generation, and to define new pathways forward.
