It goes without saying that the cooking surface of your grill is one of the most fundamental parts. The material used for the grill must be sturdy, resilient, be capable transferring heat effectively and efficiently and be as non-stick as is possible (no grill will ever be 100% non-stick for obvious reasons). But what material types are there and which is the best option for you?
Cast iron, stainless steel, standard steel and porcelain are the four most common types of material used. Quality is off the highest importance as poorly made and cheap grills will be quickly worn down by the heat, salt and oils, so be sure to choose a highly-rated manufacturer such as Nexgrill.
Steel variations: Standard steel is a big no-no. It chips very easily, which results in excessive sticking of the food, which is the last you want when cooking. Stainless steel does this as well, but not to the same degree as standard steel, so it is not a bad choice for someone who wants a fair amount of longevity but who is also on a tight budget.
Porcelain: Porcelain (particularly cheap porcelain) requires a lot of care and attention to stay in pristine condition (more so than any other grill material). It is susceptible to chips and when this happens the exposed metal underneath can rust very easily. Cleaning a porcelain grill when it is hot is something that should never be done as it is at its most vulnerable when hot, so cleaning it with a metal brush under such circumstances could cause damage.
Cast iron: this should be the number one choice for anyone. A heavy and sturdy cast iron grill will last an extraordinarily amount of time if looked after correctly. It also needs care and attention, and a drop of oil here and there will certainly not go amiss, but all in all, it’s heaviness and durability make it the best choice for a grill material.
