Sony ED-Beta and Canon A-1 Hi-8 camcorders---This track and field championship meet was held at Hayward Field in Eugene. This part covers the preliminary events and some finals that took place before the last day of the meet, which is shown on Part 2, farther down on my album.
I used a shoulder-mount steadying rig I had made and two Sony Z-200 shotgun mikes.
CBS sent a crew to cover this meet, but their program was not broadcast. On the day it was scheduled to be shown, it was pre-empted by a delayed auto race. It was re-scheduled at least twice for later in the Summer, but it never was put on the air.
I hope my video will allow some participants and their families and friends, to see this meet for the first time. I wish I could have given more coverage to the field events, but one person can catch only so much of the action at an event like this.
I used some VHS tapes I had stored for twenty years in my attic, as a source that was converted to the DV CoDec for uploading to a computer. Then I rendered it into MP4 at 5 Mbps. If the uploaded video is downloaded at this bit-rate, it will have higher quality than the more compressed version that is shown on Vimeo. I'm disappointed by the jerkiness that Vimeo's compression has given to the playback here. Any subscriber to Vimeo can download the highest-quality version, for improved playback smoothness.
