'Animated Life’ is a short video series published by the New York Times Op-Docs that celebrates scientific discoveries that changed the world using stringent journalism and paper puppets. The three episodes submitted here include Animated Life: Seeing The Invisible, the story of the man who saw microbes for the first time; Animated Life: Mary Leakey, the story of the discovery of ancient hominid footprints, and Animated Life: Coelacanth, the story of the discovery of a living fossil fish, long thought to be extinct. Each film in the series uses sympathetic character development, clever audio editing, and painstakingly handmade visuals to bring to life these pivotal moments of scientific discovery in a novel - and at times humorous - format.
