Skijoring is a wild combination of horsemanship, skiing and teamwork as skiers are towed behind fast horses carrying riders. The sport demands many skills as the skiers must negotiate jumps and collect rings located on the course, at high speed on an icy track. The first annual Flathead Lake Skijoring Championship was held on December 31st and January 1st, and attracted huge crowds and 99 teams of contestants. The thrill is further compounded with a "calcutta" auction, where bidders can acquire a stake in the success of the team that is successfully bid upon, and races the next day.
The organizers of this event, held in beautiful Lakeside, Montana, look forward to hosting another exciting competition later this year. If you have a chance to witness this sport, it is worth your attendance.
