La Grave is well known for it's off piste skiing on La Meije and by climbers for it's winter ice climbing or as the french call it "cascade du glace".
For the past ten years each January we've ice climbed in the Ecrin area and even on the cascade, Le Saut de La Pucelle but this summer was our first time rock climbing in the area.
In fact. We've actually climbed both the right and left hand side of the waterfall - when frozen of course!! You can see the winter video at youtube.com/watch?v=OaniJszoOXw
This summer we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of some of the sport routes in the area and very impressed with the recently created five pitch route "Rive Droite" in the Freaux Secteur.
The route takes an amazing line and the rock is a lot better than it looks as it weaves it's way through the overhangs on several different bands of rock.
The fourth pitch up the steep orange crystal wall to a hanging belay is absolutely stunning - once you trust the weird orange crystal holds and the hanging belay...!
This new route is bound to become a real classic ;-)
