You hear three blows given by a wooden rod on the stage floor, and then the hefty red curtain before you opens. You get on stage. In front of you is a box full of playing cards. You open it. But you barely have time to play around with the King and Queen of Hearts, who amuse you with their funny faces that a Rabbit bursts into the room and jostles you. LATE. You’re late to your own crowning, Alice. Obviously, he does not like you very much. Same goes for the Caterpillar and for Humpty Dumpty, whom you will meet as your dream goes further; you are constantly put to the test, scolded like a child… But fortunately, the bizarre forest you have to go through also comes with those sweet mushrooms that make you grow very tall. You are now on the great chessboard, and it is time to make your final move. Will you catch your crown before the clock strikes?
About the project
Alice, The Virtual Reality Play is bathed into the work of Lewis Caroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The play challenges the concept of identity itself and tackles issues such as obsessing over time, the rules of logic, and the absurd. The rules of the game unveil alongside the main narrative: the audience understands progressively that they are Alice, and that they must, just like Lewis Caroll’s heroine, engage with the characters they meet. The journey becomes a rite of passage, bound to lead to a final crowning.
Alice, The Virtual Reality Play is a complete VR experience which immerses the audience into a virtual scenery and allows them to interact physically in real time with characters and objects. It follows the lead of the immersive theatre, an emerging current in London and New-York, and it takes the status of the spectator to another level: the audience is brought to the stage and they become actors, whose decisions and actions participate in building the narrative and the visual universe of the play.
